RESUMO

Gabiroba, a native fruit in Brazil's Atlantic Forest region, has significant nutritional and therapeutic properties. However, due to its seasonality, consumption by the population is limited. Thus, the development of gabiroba byproducts would add significant value to the food and therapeutic industries. Therefore, it is essential to study and support the lack of toxicity of gabiroba fruit extracts. In the present study, physicochemical analyses of fresh fruits (GF) and dehydrated whole gabiroba flour (WGF) and preliminary toxicity analyses of WGF were performed. The toxicity results showed a microcrustacean LC50 of >1000 mg/mL when exposed to WGF extracts at various concentrations (10-1000 µg/mL; p = 0.062) using the Artemia salina method, with no evidence observed of proliferative activity or toxic metabolic compounds in the WGF extract. The phytotoxicity of WGF using Lactuca sativa L. allowed germination and root growth at various concentrations of WGF extract, with the lowest (100 µg/mL) and highest (1000 µg/mL) concentrations exhibiting 98.3% and 100% seed germination, respectively. In conclusion, these results indicate that the WGF preparation preserved the nutritional and antioxidant potential of gabiroba fruits and that WGF is safe for use as a raw material in the food industry and for therapeutic purposes.

RESUMO

This integrative review aims to identify the main flavonoids present in some species of the Myrtaceae family. Studies published between 2016 and 2022 were selected, specifically those which were fully available and written in Portuguese, English, or Spanish, and which were related to the fruits araçá (Psidium cattleianum), cambuí (Myrciaria floribunda), gabiroba (Campomanesia xanthocarpa), jabuticaba (Plinia cauliflora), and jambolan (Syzygium cumini). Scientific studies were gathered and selected in Google Scholar, Scielo, and Science Direct indexed databases, out of which 14 were about araçá, 7 concerned cambuí, 4 were about gabiroba, 29 were related to jabuticaba, and 33 concerned jambolan, when we observed the pre-established inclusion criteria. Results showed that the anthocyanins, such as cyanidin, petunidin, malvidin, and delphinidin, were the mostly identified class of flavonoids in plants of the Myrtaceae family, mainly relating to the purple/reddish color of the evaluated fruits. Other compounds, such as catechin, epicatechin, quercetin, and rutin were also identified in different constituent fractions, such as leaves, peel, pulp, seeds, and in developed products, such as jams, desserts, wines, teas, and other beverages. It is also worth noting the positive health effects verified in these studies, such as anti-inflammatory qualities for jambolan, antidiabetic qualities for gabiroba, antioxidant qualities for araçá, and cardioprotective actions for jabuticaba, which are related to the presence of these phytochemicals. Therefore, it is possible to point out that flavonoids are important compounds in the chemical constitution of the studied plants of the Myrtaceae family, with promising potential in the development of new products by the food, chemical, and pharmaceutical industries due to their bioactive properties.

RESUMO

Abstract Campomanesia xanthocarpa, a plant belonging to the Myrtaceae family, is popularly known as gabiroba. Leaves of gabiroba has been popularly used to treat various diseases, including inflammatory, renal, and digestive, among others. Additionally, studies have shown an effect to reduce blood cholesterol levels. The aim of this study was to evaluate the antihyperglycemic and hypolipidemic effects of Campomanesia xanthocarpa seed extract in hyperglycemic rats. The results showed that 400 mg/kg of seed extract was able to decrease blood glucose levels and to increase the muscular and hepatic glycogen content as well as to inhibit the sucrase and maltase activity. At doses of 200 mg/kg and 800 mg/kg, the activity of these enzymes was also reduced. In the lipid profile 400 mg/kg produced a decrease in total and LDL cholesterol serum levels; and with 200 mg/kg there was an increase in HDL cholesterol levels. The extract did not present hepatic and renal toxic effects at the different doses tested. The results suggest that the treatment with Campomanesia xanthocarpa seeds extract is useful in reducing glycemia, total cholesterol and LDL levels with potential adjuvant therapeutic in the treatment of diabetes and hypercholesterolemia, however, additional pharmacological and toxicological studies are still required.

RESUMO

In fermented milks inoculated with two thermophilic strains (Lactobacillus bulgaricus and Streptococcus thermophilus), guabiroba pulp (Campomanesia xanthocarpa O. Berg) was added in different concentrations: 5% (I5 sample) and 10% (I10 sample), compared to a control sample, with no pulp addition. In these fermented milks, Bifidobacterium BB-12 was added and the samples were submitted to a progressive gastrointestinal simulation in vitro. The cells count was performed, including the survival rates for all the progressive steps of the simulated digestion. Total phenolic content (TPC) and antioxidant activity analysis by FRAP (Ferric Reducing Antioxidant Power) and DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) were performed in all the gastrointestinal steps. Before and during the entire gastrointestinal tract, the Bifidobacterium BB-12 count was 8-9 log CFU g-1, above the recommended for a probiotic product, with a highlight in intestinal colon steps. The I10 sample showed the highest viable cell count, the highest total phenolic content and antioxidant activity throughout the entire gastric steps (p < 0.05). The fermented milk proved to be an effective matrix for the probiotic stability and incorporation of guabiroba components. Bioactive compounds present in the guabiroba pulp may have occasioned a prebiotic and protective effect on Bifidobacterium BB-12 after gastric conditions. The possible bioconversion of these compounds in more active forms can contribute to the absorption in epithelial cells, enhancing fermented milks with guabiroba pulp as important sources of dietary accessible bioactive compounds.

RESUMO

Campomanesia xanthocarpa var. littoralis, Campomanesia xanthocarpa (Berg), and Campomanesia eugenioides are native fruit plants found in Brazil. Due to the scarce number of controlled scientific studies comparing different native Campomanesia species, this study sought to determine their bioactive compounds and antioxidant properties. C. eugenioides proved to be a rich source of total phenolic compounds, also showing the best antioxidant capacity by the ABTS, DPPH and molybdenum reduction power methods. On the other hand, C. xanthocarpa var. littoralis showed the best results for total flavonoids content, and Iron(II) chelation power. The phenolic compounds contents present in C. eugenioides could be responsible for the best antioxidant activity. This study provides key scientific data regarding the use of valuable fruits from different edible Campomanesia species to produce bioactive ingredients, as well as natural preservatives for food products. Thus, our results contribute to the discovery of the potential application of these native Campomanesia Brazilian fruits, as a natural product with functional and antioxidant properties.

RESUMO

Chemical investigation of the extracts of the fruits from Campomanesia xanthocarpa resulted in the isolation of six known compounds identified by NMR and comparison with literature data (2',4'-dihydroxy-5'-methyl-6'-methoxychalcone (1), 2',4'-dihydroxy-3',5'-dimethyl-6'-methoxychalcone (2), 2'-hydroxy-3'-methyl-4',6'-dimethoxychalcone (3), 2',6'-dihydroxy-3'-methyl-4'-methoxychalcone (4), 5-hydroxy-7-methoxy-8-methylflavanone (5) and 7-hydroxy-5-methoxy-6-methylflavanone (6)). The considerable antioxidant capacity of the extracts was demonstrated by ORAC-FL and DPPH tests. The antiproliferative assay of the extracts and 5 was done in vitro, against many different cancer cell lines besides a healthy one. The extracts presented low cytotoxicity and the substance demonstrated promising results against all the cancer cell lines tested, with IC50 values ranging from 4.75 to 45.81 µmol L-1. The in vitro trypanocidal activity was evaluated against the epimastigote form of the Y strain of Trypanosoma cruzi and an improvement in the activity of the substances 2 (221.81 µmol L-1) and 5 (61.87 µmol L-1) was observed regarding the values obtained for the extracts.

RESUMO

Campomanesia xanthocarpa popularly known as gabiroba is used as a medicinal plant for the treatment of inflammatory diseases, ulcers, among other uses, requiring studies to assist in proving these activities. In this study, the extract of leaves from C. xanthocarpa (CxHE) was submitted to assays of formalin-induced paw-licking, peritonitis induced by lipopolysaccharide and carrageenan-induced mechanical hyperalgesia tests. In chemical analysis, a preliminary phytochemical screening and the determination of phenol and flavonoid content were carried out, in addition to analysis by ESI-MS/MS system and HPLC-DAD system. The CxHE presented compounds such as tannins, triterpenoids, steroids and saponins and content of phenols (35.9 ± 1.3 GAE/g extract) and flavonoids (23.3 ± 2.1 mg EQ/g extract). Protocatechuic acid, gallic acid, ethyl gallate, quercetin, and 3-methyl epigallocatechin gallate, alpha and beta-amyrins were identified. CxHE at doses of 10-1000 mg/kg p.o. demonstrated anti-inflammatory and antinociceptive effects in all in vivo assays employed in this study. [Figure: see text].

RESUMO

The Myrtaceae family is one of the world's leading commercial fruit tree families. Among the 121 genera belonging to this family, the Syzygium, Eugenia and Campomanesia genera are constituted by a wide variety of fruit species with great potential to be explored economically, besides presenting excellent nutritional value and being considered sources of phytochemicals such as phenolic compounds, carotenoids and volatile compounds. Many of these phytochemicals have been linked to the prevention and management of several chronic and degenerative diseases including cancer, cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes mellitus, obesity, amnesia among other disorders. In this context, this review discusses about the importance of four fruits species representative of Myrtaceae family such as Syzygium cumini, Syzygium malaccense, Eugenia pyriformis and Campomanesia xanthocarpa, focusing on the nutrients and phytochemical constituents as well as demonstrating their biological effects in order to stimulate the cultivation and consumption of these fruits.

RESUMO

In this study, we isolated and structurally characterized, for the first time, a galactoglucomannan (GGM) from the pulp of gabiroba, a Myrtaceae family species. The HPSEC-MALLS-RI analysis showed a homogeneous polysaccharide with molar mass of 25,340gmol-1. The monosaccharide composition showed that the GGM consisted of Man:Glc:Gal in a molar ratio of 1:1:0.6. Methylation and 1D and 2D NMR analyses suggested that the main chain of the GGM consisted of ß-d-Glcp and ß-d-Manp units (1→4)-linked. The α-d-Galp substitutions occur mainly at O-6 position of ß-d-Manp units. The glycosidic linkages of the GGM were evident by the presence of the characteristic signals of 4-O-substituted residues at δ 78.6/3.69 for both ß-d-Glcp and ß-d-Manp. Furthermore, the O-6 substitutions for both ß-d-Glcp and ß-d-Manp units were confirmed by signals at δ 67.1/4.00 and 3.93. The interglycosidic correlations, obtained through the analysis of the HMBC spectrum, further confirm the structure.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT: The aim of this study was to characterize the demographic structure and spatial pattern of Campomanesia xanthocarpa (Mart.) O. Berg, Myrcianthes gigantea (D. Legrand) D. Legrand and Myrciaria delicatula (DC.) O. Berg. Within one hectare of Ombrophilous Mixed Forest, all the three populations' individuals were counted and measured with regard to their height and diameter. From the collected data, the assessment of the demographic structure was realized after the individual's size classification. Spatial pattern was determined by applying the Standardized Morisita's Index. C. xanthocarpa and M. delicatula showed an inverted-J frequency distribution in the individuals size classes, which differed from M. gigantea that did not follow the same pattern. The spatial pattern of C. xanthocarpa and M. delicatula populations was found mainly to be aggregated; whereas, M. gigantea showed spatial randomness. The three Myrtaceae populations responded differently with regard to structure and spatial distribution in sites with the same environmental filters.

Campomanesia xanthocarpa (Myrtaceae) is used in Brazilian traditional medicine against fever, diabetes, hypercholesteremic, obesity, and urinary diseases. In the present study, the compounds 2',6'-dihydroxy-3'-methyl-4'-metoxychalcone and 2',4'-dihydroxy-3',5'-dimethyl-6'-methoxychalcone were identified for the first time in leaves of the C. xanthocarpa. These compounds and the hydroethanolic extract (HECX) significantly inhibited paw edema and reduced both leukocyte migration and the leakage of protein into the pleural cavity. No toxicity was detected by HECX in an acute toxicity test.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the chromatographic profile, the antioxidant activity, and the levels of phenols and flavonoids in organic extracts and infusions from leaves of the species C. xanthocarpa and C. sessiliflora collected during the vegetative and reproductive periods. Analyses of the extracts and infusions were performed by adopting high-performance liquid chromatography with diode array detector (HPLC-DAD). Based on the comparison of the obtained profiles, similarity between the chemical composition of the two species was low. Phenol levels (64.69-334.18 µg gallic acid mL-1) were superior to the level of flavonoids (4.02-35.60 µg quercetin mL-1) in all analyses. Organic extracts and infusions from leaves collected in the reproductive period had superior phenol and flavonoid levels in both species. There was not a linear correlation of phenol and flavonoid levels with antioxidant activity in all samples.

RESUMO

The objective of this research was to identify the effects of 3-week treatment of normal and streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats using a leaf decoction of Campomanesia xanthocarpa Berg. (20 g/L) on physiological, biochemical and histological parameters. Streptozotocin (STZ, 70 mg/kg in citrate buffer, pH 4.5) was administered IP to induce experimental diabetes one week prior to the treatment. STZ caused typical diabetic symptoms: polydypsia, polyuria, polyphagia, hyperglycemia, hypertriglyceridemia and histopathological modifications in the pancreas, liver and kidney. The treatment of diabetic rats using the decoction decreased blood glucose levels, inhibited hepatic glycogen loss, and prevented potential histopathological alterations in the pancreas and kidneys. No differences were found between the control rats treated with the decoction and the control rats maintained on water only. In conclusion, these results suggest that C. xanthocarpa leaf decoction (20g/L) might be useful for diabetes mellitus management, but further pharmacological and toxicological studies are needed.
